Verdant Power, LLC of Arlington, VA, a business specializing in kinetic hydropower systems, is teaming with GCK Technology, Inc. to advance the Gorlov Helical Turbines developed by Dr. Alexander Gorlov of Northeastern University. MTC is providing a grant to construct and demonstrate a hydroelectric plant with capacity of approximately 20 kW utilizing six Gorlov helical turbines in the Merrimack River in Amesbury, Massachusetts. The proposed system is designed to extract useful electrical energy from free flowing river and tidal currents. The proposed demonstration project includes an experimental program for a single rotor turbine system up to combinations of 6 turbine generators sited on a floating platform. Preliminary estimates of the available resource indicate that a long-term benefit exists for the development of the technology in MA and New England.
